When to consider upgrading a flute:

-when the player exhibits a marked interest in continuing to study and perform

- when playing more technical passages

- looking for more ease of playability and quicker response

-entering high school level or college

-when the instructor is desiring a higher level performance

-when seeking improved better tone and tonal colors

Intermediate model to semi-pro flutes, which are also known as “performance”, “step-up”, or “conservatory,” are great for high school and college level players.  Intermediate flutes usually have an all-silver head joint or a mix of higher-grade alloys and the options of all-silver body with more handmade work, open-hole design, and B foot joint.  Higher grades of silver content provide a richer, warmer tone and a clean, crisp response.  A higher level instrument will usually provide more accurate intonation and a better dynamic range for “performance,” and allow more ease in higher-range and for technical passages.  Other options include gold springs, inline or offset G, split E mechanism, lower G insert, & C# trill key.

Pro players usually play on a solid silver or gold flute with gold springs and french- key cups with an advanced scale design and a cut custom head joint. At this level, usually head joint customization through strictly a head joint maker is preferred.

For those who may be allergic to silver, gold is hypo-allergenic.  We offer gold lip-plated flutes for those of any who are sensitive to metal.
